PNG, SVG AND DXF

SVG or DXF for laser engraving: which format should you use?

The best format depends on the artwork and what you plan to do in LightBurn. No file type is superior in every situation: photos, logos, cutting outlines and technical drawings have different needs.

PNG: best when the information lives in pixels

Photos, stippling, complex hatching and textured artwork can work very well as PNG. The file preserves the exact visual pixel pattern. For vector cutting, however, you will usually need to trace or rebuild the contours.

SVG: ideal for clean vector shapes

SVG is excellent for logos, lettering, outlines and artwork made from well-defined curves and shapes. Because it is vector-based, it scales without losing definition. A poorly built SVG with thousands of nodes can still be heavy and difficult to edit.

DXF: useful when geometry and dimensions matter

DXF is common in CAD, cutting and line-based workflows. It is useful for moving geometry between programs. Always verify units and dimensions after import because different applications can interpret scale differently.

Choose the format based on the job

For a prepared engraving photo, PNG may be the most direct choice. For a clean logo, SVG is often convenient. For CAD-like lines and measured geometry, DXF may fit better. Always validate physical size and appearance before sending the job to the machine.

Practical rule

  • Photos and texture: consider PNG.
  • Logos and vector outlines: consider SVG.
  • Technical geometry: consider DXF.
  • Verify units and size after import.
  • Vector format does not automatically mean clean artwork.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting PNG to SVG automatically improve engraving?

No. Automatic conversion can create thousands of nodes and reproduce the noise from the original image. Quality depends on clean artwork and good structure, not just the file extension.

Why can a DXF open at a different size?

DXF can move through programs that interpret units or scaling differently. Always confirm the physical width and height after import and before engraving or cutting.
